The current building of the Muleta refuge dates from 1912. It used to be an old wireless telegraphy station located at Cape “Gros” that worked until 1953.
In 1999, Sóller City Council signed an agreement with Majorca Island Council to restore the abandoned building so it would become a refuge, part of the Dry Stone Route.
The building was restored between 1997 and 1999 thanks to the “Vall de Sóller” trade school. The carpentry and stone works of this project were done by former students of the Heritage Department of the Majorca Island Council.
From the refuge you can visit the villages of Sóller, Binibassí, Fornalutx, Deia, Sóller valley, and follow the roads of Castelló, Rocafort, es Teix, etc. The refuge is part of the GR 221 Dry Stone Route.
From a naturalistic point of view, the refuge is surrounded by an interesting flora and vegetation with juniper bushes, a typical coastal bush that here, in the “Sierra de Tramontana”, can just be found in the Cape “Gros” area.
As for the fauna, you can easily observe different species of prey birds, sea birds and on the migration season, it is a common route for many species.
Also interesting are the geological outcrops in the area. From an historical point of view, the area has important archaeological and paleontological remains.
You can reach “Muleta” area by following the lighthouse road, which takes about 20 minutes if you start to walk from the beach. As you ascend, take your time to enjoy the excellent views over the bay.
