Boca do Rio Beach means river mouth beach, and in fact, the beach sits at the mouth of three streams: the Ribeira de Almádena, the Ribeira de Vale de Boi, and the Ribeira de Budens. The convergence of these streams has resulted in a wet zone near the mouth, known as Paul da Lontreira. This is a habitat for otters, which can also be seen on the beach at times. This is very rare with otters, which normally stay in and near rivers. The surroundings of the Boca do Rio Beach are rich in biodiversity, especially birds. Its fishing vocation goes back at least to the Roman Period. The building dominating the cove dates back to the 18th century, and was built by order of the Marquis of Pombal to protect the installations and the workers of the tuna fishery that operated here. The beach is an invitation to some of the walks around here, and in fact, a guided circuit is provided with this application. With marked Mediterranean characteristics, this beach is part of the Natural Park of Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina.
